So, I’m a bit out of my mind this morning; can’t remember things, losing track of time, my fat fingers are having a hard time with my slurring words. . .What what I shayinggg . . . It wash a real ruf wknd. . . How can I figure out what’s going on?

Let’s find out this Medical Monday.

Altered level of consciousness can be a very difficult problem to determine the cause and treat our patients. There are many different things that can affect our ability to speak, recognize our surroundings or create rational thoughts. For this there is the mnemonic of AEIOU-TIPS to help us consider all of the many causes of Altered Level of Consciousness.

We may sometimes mistake an altered patient for one that has cognitive issues or prior brain injuries. If possible, it’s always best to talk to family or friends to determine the person’s normal baseline.

So without comment about my underlying senility, let’s try to find out why our guests are acting abnormally.
